"Mahashivratri' means the "great night of lord shiv ", it's a Hindu festival which is celebrated all over India as well as in Nepal in honor of lord Shiv. Every lunar month there is shivratri, but the main festival is called Maha Shivratri which is celebrated on the 13th night and 14th day of the month of Phalgun according to the Hindu calender. Unlike other festivals of Hindusim its not celebrated in day, as this night is referred as the night of "overcoming darkness and ignorance.
There are different significance of celebrating Maha Shivratri, according to some mythlogical legends this the night when Shiva got married to Parvati, another is that when god and demons churned the ocean together to obtain the "amrit"(ambrosia), that lays in the depths of its, a pot of poison emerged so to save the gods and mankind lord shiv gulped that poison which turned his throat in blue after which he was named as "Neel Kanth", to honor the savior of the world Maha Shivratri is celebrated.
WHAT TO DO ON MAHASHIVRATRI
Fasting on Mahashivratri serves detoxifying the body and keeping the mind restless which aid to meditation. Some do medatetive yog, they also do "jagran" (stay awake whole night), and chant mantras and do prayers .The auspicious night of Mahashivratri is the night to connect the soul with the source of energy (Shiv).
On this night one should perform "Pancoupchar" and "Solupchar", or you can sit in front of the idol of lord Shiv and do the "Shivmahimna stotra , or chanting of Mahamritunjay Mantra can also benefit one into physical as well as mental health. On this night worshiping Shakti along with lord Shiv is also considered to be very scared.
According to your mental potential you can take oath for worshiping lord Shiv for welfare of the mankind.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्
